Flossing Your Teeth Is Easy If You Do It Right

September 11, 2015

Flossing your teeth is necessary and should be practiced correctly. Many people don’t really think much of flossing these days. They often believe that brushing alone will keep their mouths healthy, but this isn’t true. Brushing helps keep oral health in good standing, but it can’t do the job alone. Flossing is just as vital as brushing. It helps keep the spaces between your teeth free of harmful bacteria, food particles and more. When a patient chooses not to floss their teeth, they’re practically inviting bacteria to multiply and throw a party in your mouth. Flossing helps break up this party for good and keeps those hard-to-reach areas for toothbrushes clean.

There’s no need to feel embarrassed if you’re unsure of the proper way to floss your teeth. It’s never too late to learn, and now is a great time. True, you won’t experience a disease overnight if you don’t floss your teeth, but if it becomes habit then you will end up with a dental problem on your hands. Our Rocky Hill, CT office has plenty of additional dental services that can help keep your oral health operating at maximum efficiency. Dr. Michalski is the dentist Rocky Hill, CT residents can trust to keep their oral health in excellent standing.

Our office works to conserve energy and water whenever possible, but we’ve invested in the future with renewable energy sources. We use solar panels to produce more than half of our electricity significantly reducing the amount of energy we consume. Our water, heating and air conditioning systems are maintained using three heat pumps that cycle water through wells. This process is known as geo thermal exchange. We are able to use the consistent ground temperature to heat and cool our office, and heat given off by the pumps is used to heat our water.

Additionally, Dr. Michalski commits hours each year to continuing education in numerous areas of general dentistry. Straighten Your Teeth without Braces: Invisalign in Rocky Hill, CT

May 10, 2015

487780771If your teeth are crooked, crowded, oddly spaced, or otherwise improperly aligned, you understand what an impact the status of your smile can have on your daily life. For adults and teens seeking orthodontic treatment, the thought of spending years in traditional metal braces simply isn’t an appealing option. At the Rocky Hill, CT dental office of Dr. Thaddeus S. Michalski, individuals looking for an alternative to metal braces are invited to explore the possibilities afforded by Invisalign.

Benefits of Invisalign Clear Aligners

The most frequently cited advantage of Invisalign over regular braces is their appearance. The clear acrylic trays are virtually invisible when you smile, allowing you to show off your teeth even as they are gradually shifted into their proper positions. This is an especially attractive feature for polished professionals and image-conscious teens seeking a less conspicuous solution to crooked teeth. Invisalign is also capable of correcting open bites, crossbite, underbite, overbite, and gaps between teeth.

Aside from their obvious aesthetic appeal, Invisalign clear aligners are also exceptionally comfortable as compared to conventional braces. There are no metal wires or brackets to irritate the inner lining of the cheeks and lips, only smooth plastic that is custom-formed to the shape of your teeth. In addition, Invisalign trays are easily removed for eating and home hygiene. Dr. Michalski’s patients love the versatility and freedom of Invisalign as much as they do their clear composition.

How Does Your Workout Affect Your Smile? Oral Health for Athletes

February 6, 2015

451855347Working out regularly is an essential part of a healthy lifestyle, but have you ever wondered how your fitness regimen might be impacting the health of your teeth and gums? If not, you’re not alone. The effects of exercise on the mouth are still under research, but a recent study has shown us that working out – running, in particularly – can actually influence our oral health. At the Rocky Hill, CT dental office of Thaddeus S. Michalski, DMD, Dr. Michalski and his team strive to provide our patients with valuable information regarding oral health and wellness on a daily basis. Today, we’d like to discuss athletes and oral health.

Do Athletes Get More Cavities?

In a study published in the Scandinavian Journal of Medicine and Science in Sports, a team of German researchers found that runners had more cases of tooth erosion than their non-athlete counterparts. The underlying cause of this potentially serious issue is twofold: a high-carb diet and diminished salivary flow.

First, a diet that is high in carbohydrates can drastically reduce the pH level within the mouth, leading to a higher incidence of tooth decay. When the pH level dips below 5.5, the mouth becomes an environment that is more susceptible to dental caries.

Secondly, a decrease in saliva can lead to tooth decay and even increase the risk of periodontal disease. This is because your saliva actively washes away acid-causing bacteria. Without sufficient saliva, bacteria accumulate more rapidly on the teeth and along the gum line. The lack of saliva in the athletes tested was attributed to mouth breathing while training.

Fortunately, improving your oral health doesn’t necessarily mean altering your exercise routine. Simply visit Dr. Michalski and his team in Rocky Hill, CT twice per year (or more frequently if advised) and follow a stringent home hygiene routine to protect your teeth and gums from damage.

Tooth-Colored Fillings for a Naturally Beautiful Smile with Dr. Michalski

January 6, 2015

101475871For nearly 100 years, dental cavities were filled with an amalgam of metals, including silver, copper, tin, and mercury. While these amalgam fillings were effective at keeping further decay at bay, pioneers in the dental field felt that the formula could stand to improve. Today, we use composite resin to create tooth-colored fillings instead of unsightly metal amalgam fillings. With Dr. Thaddeus S. Michalski as your trusted partner, you can achieve lasting oral health in a way that still looks and feels completely natural.

Advantages of Tooth-Colored Fillings vs. Amalgams

No one likes a mouth full of dark metal fillings; it’s a well-known fact that white, luminous teeth are the hallmarks of a healthy, attractive smile. If your smile falls victim to dental caries (cavities), you shouldn’t have to endure the appearance of shiny metal amalgams just to regain your oral health. With composite resin tooth-colored fillings, you can enjoy a healthy smile that looks beautiful and confident without any of the drawbacks of amalgam fillings.

The benefits of tooth-colored fillings go beyond the cosmetic. In fact, composite resin fillings are actually considered better for your teeth in general. This is because their placement requires less of your natural tooth to be removed in preparation. The resin actually forms a tighter seal with your enamel as well, preventing further decay following your filling procedure. In addition, tooth-colored fillings will not adversely react to changes in temperature like amalgams do, so you can rest assured in the knowledge that your restoration will remain intact for years to come without damaging your teeth.

A Natural Approach You Can Trust

At the office of Dr. Thaddeus S. Michalski in Rocky Hill, CT, we believe that dentistry should align with nature as often as possible. That is why we take a genuinely “green” approach to our work, only offering treatments that utilize non-toxic materials like composite resin for dental fillings. If you’d like to learn more about the benefits of tooth-colored fillings, contact us today. We can help you make an informed decision regarding your oral health, offering valuable advice and insight about a wide range of restorative and cosmetic dentistry solutions. Our state-of-the-art dental practice in Rocky Hill, CT is proud to serve families from throughout the surrounding communities, including those in Wethersfield, Newington, Berlin, Cromwell, Hartford, and beyond.

Preserve Your Oral Health with Gum Disease Therapy in Rocky Hill, CT

December 10, 2014

178845072When you think of gum disease, what is the first thing that comes to mind? Perhaps you imagine someone with persistent halitosis (bad breath) or even recurring bleeding following brushing or flossing. While these are certainly common complications of gum disease, there are even more serious side effects that may arise without proper treatment. Today, we’d like to discuss some of the most important reasons to seek periodontal therapy in cases of even moderate gum disease, a condition that affects approximately 80 percent of the American population. Dr. Thaddeus S. Michalski offers a wide range of general and preventive dentistry solutions to families in Rocky Hill, CT, including gum disease therapy.

Avoiding Complications of Gum Disease

While brushing and flossing your teeth twice per day are undeniably critical to your oral health, biannual checkups are just as important in the fight against gum disease. This is because the plaque that hides beneath the gum line is impossible to completely remove with regular home hygiene. When this plaque is allowed to build up on the teeth and beneath the gums, it causes inflammation and infection that can lead to health problems in other areas of the body. In fact, gum disease has been linked to a variety of medical issues, including an increased risk of stroke, heart disease, heart attack, and even some forms of cancer.

Fortunately, there is a way to reduce your likelihood of developing these and other problems. In addition to taking care of your teeth and gums at home every morning and night, simply visit Dr. Michalski at his Rocky Hill, CT dental practice once every six months to ensure that your oral health stays on the right track. If we do discover that gum disease has taken hold, we’ll suggest a comprehensive treatment plan that can effectively halt the disease’s progress, preserving the health of your smile.

Schedule Your Dental Checkup Today

Has it been more than six months since you last visited a dentist? If so, now is the perfect time to schedule your appointment. Contact us today to learn more about how routine checkups and cleanings can drastically reduce your risk of developing potentially dangerous gum disease, and schedule your visit with our caring, experienced team. Conveniently located in Rocky Hill, CT, the office of Dr. Thaddeus Michalski warmly welcomes patients from throughout the surrounding areas as well, including Hartford, Berlin, Cromwell, Newington, Wethersfield, and beyond.

The holiday season can be a dangerous time of year for your family’s dental health. But there are several easy ways to combat these dental dangers. First, try not to do a lot of snacking in between meals. Even if you indulge in sugary desserts, it’s best to do so after eating a full healthy meal, rather than snacking throughout the day. This reduces the total amount of time your teeth are exposed to harmful sugary residue. Next, keep a pack of sugar free gum handy. Not only will chewing gum create the excess saliva needed to wash away bacteria, it also contains the ingredient Xylitol. Xylitol has been shown to help fight the bacteria that cause cavities and decay. Finally, increase your dairy intake. Drinking a glass of low fat milk, or eating a piece of cheese, after consuming something sugary, can wash away the excess sugars. Dairy products also contain the calcium and vitamin D needed to keep your teeth strong and healthy .

Root for Root Canal Therapy in Rocky Hill, CT

October 15, 2014

167121308If you had a bad toothache, would you rather save the tooth or have the tooth pulled? The answer, of course, is practically obvious. Save the tooth! More often than not, saving a tooth may require a root canal, especially if the toothache is caused by an infection deep within the tooth. With root canal therapy, Dr. Thaddeus S. Michalski and his staff in Rocky Hill, CT, can save the tooth and your smile.

A root canal is dental procedure that removes infected pulp tissue from the innermost part of a tooth. Dental pulp is comprised of nerve and lymph tissue, as well as blood vessels. This pulp may become infected as a result of oral bacteria that migrates to the pulp through a deep cavity; a crack in the tooth that penetrates the pulp; or a powerful hit to the face. The resultant infection can cause significant pain and runs the risk of spreading beyond the tooth.

The signs and symptoms of diseased or infected tooth pulp may include:

  • Moderate to severe tooth pain
  • Swollen gums around the affected tooth
  • A tooth that is discolored
  • Visible signs of infection on an x-ray

Once Dr. Michalski confirms that a tooth is deeply infected, he will recommend root canal therapy. During a root canal, Dr. Michalski will clean out the bacteria and infection, as well as remove the nerve, lymph and blood tissue from inside the tooth and its roots. The tooth is filled with a material that prevents the infection from returning, and then the tooth is typically outfitted for a protective crown that ensures the tooth’s strength and functionality. Once the root canal is completed and the crown is in place, the tooth can last for a lifetime with proper brushing, flossing and regular dental check-ups.
